The Department of Biological Engineering of Zhengzhou University was founded in March, 2001 and was renamed as School of Life Sciences of Zhengzhou University (SLS) in May, 2013. The SLS has 100 faculty and staff, including 77 full-time research and teaching staff. There are 20 professors and 33 associate professors in the full-time research and teaching staff. Among them, 75 staff have a PhD degree and 29 staff had been working or studying overseas. There are 16 research staff qualified as PhD promotors and 55 staff qualified as master supervisors.

The SLS has a first-level doctorate discipline in biology, a first-level master discipline in biology, and a professional master discipline in biological engineering. The Biology Discipline of SLS were selected as one of the Key Disciplines of Henan Province in 2017 and Advantageous Disciplines of Henan Province (Class B) in 2015. The disciplines of Biology and Biochemistry, as well as Molecular Biology and Genetics of Zhengzhou University are global Top 1% of Essential Science Indicators (ESI). The Biology Discipline of Zhengzhou University were ranked Top 17% in Shanghai Ranking of Chinese Universities in 2019.

The SLS has 5 innovative research teams of Henan Province and established Henan Key Laboratory of Functional Biological Macromolecules and other research platforms. There are five main research institutes of SLS, including Stem Cell and Transformation Applications, Biochemistry and Biopharmaceuticals, Molecular Immunity and Antibody Engineering, Biodiversity, and Bioinformatics and Tumor Immunity.
