内容提要:In the 1840s, Britain entered both the industrial and the capitalist age. Workers had jobs in dangerous mines and factories that engaged wives and children for up to 14 hours a day six days a week. There was no time for the children to get primary education, and often no food to last between pay days. Parliament blocked any provisions for national schools, and economists preached that the poor should save, marry late, and have few children. To change things required “influencers” to move hearts and minds. Dickens was one of the most powerful of those writers and public figures who lobbied for allaying hunger and providing sustenance. This is the narrative of how he worked to overcome resistance to getting children taught and families fed.
