Established in 1956, Hong Kong Baptist University is a publiclyfunded institution with the mission of
providing quality higher education for the young people of Hong Kong and the Region, combining
broadbased liberal education with academic and professional rigour. The University has a student
population of around 8,200 with a broad range of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes
(leading up to PhD level) offered under its six Faculties/Schools (Arts, Business, Chinese Medicine,
Communication, Science and Social Sciences) and an Academy of Visual Arts. In addition, there
is a School of Continuing Education which offers selffinanced programmes leading to the award
of certificates/diplomas and associate, undergraduate and higher degrees in collaboration with the
University and overseas institutions. The University is now looking for a distinguished, innovative and
dynamic scholar to be the Director of the Institute of Computational and Theoretical Studies.
Director of Institute of Computational and Theoretical Studies (PR300/1011)
The Institute of Computational and Theoretical Studies will be formed by consolidating a number of
existing research centres under the Faculty of Science. The Institute, comprising different research
teams with a wide range of expertise, will offer a platform to facilitate and enhance interdisciplinary
research and ultimately attract overseas research groups for stronger and wider collaborations and
this fully echoes with the Faculty’s goal in achieving strategic research development with focus
of research on computational and theoretical studies, such as nonlinear science, web intelligence,
imaging science, parallel/distributed computing, scientific computing and statistics, ubiquitous/pervasive
computing, computational mathematics and quantitative analysis of biological systems.
The appointee should be a visionary leader and a distinguished scholar who can provide prominent
academic leadership to the Institute, inspire excellence in research, foster strong academic
partnerships and international collaborations with prestigious, globallyrenowned organizations.
The appointee will also work actively with research personnel and the senior management in the
strategic research development of the Institute and the Faculty.
Candidates should have an outstanding track record of performance in research and university
administration, excellent adaptability to changes and challenges, effective communication and
interpersonal skills, good resource management skills, and the ability to appreciate the diversity
of various disciplines so as to build a strong research team to support strategic research
development of the Institute and the Faculty. Experience in fundraising will be an additional
advantage. The ideal candidate should preferably be proficient in both English and Chinese.
Appointment Terms
The appointment will normally be made on a threeyear term, renewable subject to mutual
agreement. Remuneration package includes basic salary on the Professorial range,
retirement/gratuity benefits currently at 15% of basic salary, annual leave, medical and dental
benefits, and as appropriate, housing assistance and relocation allowance.
