Immunotherapy is becoming a mainstream approach for many cancer types. However, the antitumour efficacy, especially for human solid tumours, is still limited. This requires further comprehensive understanding of the basic mechanisms underlying tumour-immune system interactions and applying this knowledge to the development of effective immune-based cancer therapies. This Symposium is organized to highlight recent insights into the complex roles of immune components and pathways in controlling or alternatively promoting cancer, and to present the latest uses of personalized cancer vaccines, checkpoint blocking strategies, adoptive cell therapies and cellular engineering approaches, either as mono- or combinatorial therapies, that have resulted in encouraging responses.
To better understand tumour immunology and immunity as well to develop more effective therapies, the demand for predictive and robust preclinical models to minimize translational failures in immuno-oncology is at an all-time high. The golden Syrian hamster is one of the most valuable animal models for recapitulating some important human diseases. Part of the meeting is designed to feature and discuss cutting-edge complex immunocompetent and transgenic Syrian hamster models for cancer research, cardiovascular diseseases and viral infections as well as to present case studies of their successful applications.
