The Academy of Medical Sciences (AMS) is a newly established scientific research institute integrating development of new scientific disciplines, cutting-edge scientific research and the recruitment of high-level talent from across the world. It mainly focuses on translation from basic medical science to clinical application to treat and prevent disease and aims to compete with the top-flight medical institutions across the world. AMS is working together with Zhengzhou University and its nine affiliated hospitals to establish an Academic Health Science Center in Henan province in order to contribute to the well-being and prosperity of the people in Henan province. Henan has a large population of over 100 million people, and significant areas of unmet medical need that the AMS aims to address through integrated programs of translational and clinical research. Zhengzhou University is the only ‘211’ Project University in Henan Province and hence has major support from central and provincial governments. So far this year, Zhengzhou University has invested over $13 million in the construction and establishment of AMS.
In order to build the AMS into a top-flight medical institution, Zhengzhou University appointed Professor Nicholas Lemoine, a world-renowned expert in translational medicine and institutional direction, as the dean of AMS. Professor Nicholas Lemoine is a Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences of the UK, National Medical Director of the UK NIHR Clinical Research Network, and Director of Barts Cancer Institute and the Cancer Research UK Centre of Excellence in London UK. Initially focusing on scientific research in tumor prevention and treatment, the AMS will establish seven new research centers to complement and strengthen existing elements in the University and its affiliated hospitals. The seven centers are:
- Molecular Pathology
- Infection, Inflammation and Immunology
- Cell Signalling and Proteomics
- Cell and Gene Therapy
- Stem Cells and Aging
- Experimental Medicine Preventive Medicine
The AMS will adopt international standards in medical ethics, quality assurance and a new performance management system to bring out the full potential of every member of academic, technical and administrative staff. We are now recruiting Full Professors (including Chief Scientist/Centre Lead roles), Associate Professors and Assistant Professors (Early Career Researchers) and subsequently a series of career development posts for young scientists, physicians and scholars.
For Chief Scientists (Centre Lead & Full Professor), they should have an outstanding international reputation for research, secured major grant support and have consistently published papers in high impact journals. They will be expected to have a track record of scientific leadership in major centers of excellence and the potential to develop a world-leading center for translational medicine. For the clinically oriented Centers, accreditation in an appropriate medical specialty will be expected.
Each Center will employ two other Principal Investigators (Professors) who should have an international reputation in research, secured independent grant support and have published papers in high impact journals. Associate Professors will be at an intermediate stage in their academic careers with a track record as successful independent group leaders, and Assistant Professors (Early Career Researchers) will be seeking their first independent group leader appointment after four to six years of productive postdoctoral research. They will be expected to lead independent programs of research consistent with the overall theme of the individual Center, attracting major grant funding and publishing their work in high impact journals and international conferences. Scientific research capability and potential in future development in specific field is our first consideration for appointment regardless of gender, nationality and ethnicity.
In the next phase of recruitment there will be opportunities for postdoctoral research fellows, technical staff and graduate students.
