On 19th December, the inauguration of the International Demonstration Institute at the Academy of Medical Sciences of Zhengzhou University was held on the East Campus. The Inauguration was attended by Mr. Zhou Changkui, Deputy Chief Administrator of State Administration of Foreign Expert Affairs (SAFEA), Mr. Wang Song, Deputy Head of Department of Cultural and Educational Expert of SAFEA, Mr. Cuan Haichun, Deputy Director of Planning Office of Department of Cultural and Educational Expert of SAFEA, Mr. Liu Shiwei, Head of Human Resources and Social Security Department of Henan Province, Mr. Xu Zongqin, Director General of Henan Administration of Foreign Expert Affairs, Ms. Huang Hongxia, Deputy Head of Health and Family Planning Commission of Henan Province, Mr. Rong Xihai, Assistant Head of the Department of Education of Henan Province, Mr. Niu Shucheng, Party Secretary of CPC Zhengzhou University, Mr. Xing Ying, Deputy Party Secretary of CPC Zhengzhou University, Mr. Gu Zhenqing, Vice President of Zhengzhou University and Mr. Han Guohe, Vice President of Zhengzhou University. Over 500 participated in the inauguration including representatives of related schools and departments, leaders of affiliated hospitals, the media and students. The inauguration was presided over by Mr. Xing Ying, Deputy Party Secretary of CPC Zhengzhou University.
Mr. Niu Shucheng, Party Secretary of CPC Zhengzhou University firstly gave a welcome address on behalf of the University. Mr. Liu expressed his gratitude to SAFEA, the provincial government and others for their support in the development of Zhengzhou University. He introduced briefly the progress made in internationalization and the construction of the Academy of Medical Sciences (AMS). He promised to give autonomy and the institution of a special policy in promoting the future development of AMS to make it a successful trial unit as an International Demonstration Institute.
Mr. Xu Zongqin, Director General of Henan Administration of Foreign Expert Affairs awarded Professor Nick Lemoine a long-term Expert Certificate, which is the first one in Henan Province.
Professor Nick Lemoine, Dean of AMS, gave a report on progress made so far in constructing the AMS from the aspect of the establishment of AMS, research platforms construction, high-end talent introduction, internationalized student training as well as international cooperation and exchange. Professor Nick Lemoine also shared his vision in establishing the AMS, achievement made so far and the work plan for 2017.
Mr. Liu Shiwei, Head of Human Resources and Social Security Department of Henan Province emphasized the importance attached by Henan Provincial Government to talent introduction in his speech. He highlighted the achievements made by Zhengzhou University in internationalization and talent introduction especially the appointment of Professor Nick Lemoine as the Dean of AMS. The provincial government and other concerned departments will spare no effort in supporting the development of Zhengzhou University in promoting its internationalization and construction of this International Demonstration Institute.
Mr. Zhou Changkui, Deputy Chief Administrator of SAFEA delivered a speech. He particularly recognized the progress made by Zhengzhou University in the construction of the International Demonstration Institute. He appraised the strategy and determination of the leader of Zhengzhou University in striving for accreditation as a “Top Discipline and Top University’. He hoped that Henan Administration of Foreign Expert Affairs and other departments can deliver the detailed policy and coordination with others to provide a better service to foreign experts working in Henan.
After the speeches, Mr. Zhou Changkui, Mr. Liu Shiwei, Mr. Niu Shucheng and Professor Nick Lemoine inaugurated the International Demonstration Institute of AMS officially on the stage.
After the inauguration ceremony, an Internationalization Forum was held presided over by Vice-President Han Guohe. Professor Jiang Binghua, Center Lead of Cell Signaling and Proteomics of AMS shared his working experience in an international context.
‘The Plan for Promoting International Demonstration Institutes’ was launched jointly by SAFEA and the Ministry of Education in 2014. It aims to undertake a comprehensive reform by talent introduction in higher education in China. Through introducing a comprehensive recruitment program of high-level talents from abroad it will establish a series of ‘International Demonstration Institutes’ in order to explore innovation in teaching, research and administration systems and to promote the construction of a modernized system for higher education. It is reported that 13 universities operated directly under the Central Government including Peking University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University and Tianjin University are included as Trial Units. So far, 16 Trial Units have been included in the plan in three cohorts.
